Alternating stairs

Ever since spotting these gorgeous, alternating stairs by gabriella gustafson and mattias ståhlbom I have been smitten with the idea.  We have some neighboring homes around us that have beautiful attic space, but very steep, non-alternating ladder stairs installed that would be the perfect fit for something like this – and if it can be beautiful to boot, than that’s all for the better.

Alternating stairs aren’t a new idea – they have long been used on ships and in tight spaces (think teeny NYC apartments) for more economical space planning.  Sadly, in the US they are only approved for industrial settings or to lead up to loft spaces that do not contain the only bathroom.  As a consummate klutz, I can totally appreciate the zoning and code boards of our fine country – but still…  I guess we’ll just have to live vicariously through these amazing offerings:

Can you imagine an alternating tread staircase in your home?
