At the Crossroads of Design and Life

Hi ho there FLOR fans, I'm Miriam and I'll be popping in every few days to converse, share design ideas, commiserate with you all on my one-year-old's design aesthetic (which is based entirely on mashing banana into every crevice of his high chair), and hopefully inspire you…you know…if you find the musings of a stay-at-home-mom with not enough time and too much banana on her hands inspiring.

My husband and I live in Boston with our son, Little G, and a kitty named JP in a 101 year old house with a lot of “character” (meaning: don’t ever try to change a light bulb with less than a four hour window and some major tools).

So here’s my main confession.  I love design…I really, really, REALLY do…but I'm in no way, shape or form a design expert; I just know what I like.  You see, as a (fairly) new mom, I need design to meet me where I am.  It is so easy for me to look at someone else’s beautiful design and throw myself into a tizzy because nothing in my own home could ever even remotely come close to it…even if I had all the time in the world and no sticky hands to mess it up.  But that's why I am so excited to be here writing on this bloggity blog…because I have a sneaky suspicion I’m not the only person who needs the pretty things to come to me and hopefully, by meeting up at the crossroads of design and life, we can all inspire each other a bit more.

Well anyway, now that you know a little bit about me, tell me something about you.  Are you a design go-getter or do you need it to meet you where you are…and for that matter…where do you find yourself these days?

I have the same design thoughts as you, I know what I like, but I'm no expert. Congrats on joining the FLOR blog! Looking forward to following along! :)

Welcome, Miriam! I can't wait to read more about you and your design ideas/inspiration. In terms of what kind of design fan I am… I know what I like and what inspires me, but when it comes to putting items together for my own home, I never know where to begin! I love color but I am never quite sure how to use it most effectively in my home without looking like a rainbow-gone-wrong.

I definitely seek out design! I use it for inspiration in my photography! No banana smashing children or other distractions as of yet though, so my philosophy on design may change in the coming years!

SO glad to see you blogging here!!!

You and I sound a lot alike. Rarely do I know what I like until I see it and as a Mom who works full time outside of the home I rarely have the time or means to make it happen.
I'm looking forward to your thoughts and ideas.

Amen! Design needs to meet me where I am… I don't have time to chase it down and hog tie it into a perfect Martha Stewart spread.  I'm a newlywed from Seattle trying hard to make our starter townhouse a little more urban than its suburban roots. Can't wait to read more from you Miriam.  PS I like Pretzels :)

I adore houses with "character" and am particularly interested in how you'll meld the house's aesthetic with the demands of a modern family.  We're in the place where we're decorating to stage the house for resale . . . hello neutrals . . .

I am terrible with design. I wish it came more natural to me.
