Expect the unexpected

Well, we’re a few weeks into the new year and I couldn’t help but think back on the biggest trends in kids’ room designs from years past and consider where we might be headed in 2013.    It is no secret that the teepee was HUGE in 2012.  Seems like a few hipsters posted a few fantastic teepee pics and from there it took off like wildfire.  I actually don’t think this trend is over.  I think there are more possibilities to explore; from patterned fabrics to even scope and layout.  Reading nooks and playful spaces will always be on trend for kids, so look to see this continuing into the new year.

And for every space we see that leans towards more natural, organic materials as in the space above, there will be another that will continue to embrace industrial chic.  These playfully painted, steel armchairs have just the right combination of grit and whimsey.

I definitely think we’re in store for a lot more pattern and a lot less theme in children’s spaces this year.  From easily traded out pillow cases to more permanent installations of wall paper on the ceiling; color, pattern and playfulness will continue to contribue to a youthful vibe.

Which brings me to my next trend spot: the unexpected.  As we lean towards spaces that are more personalized and meaningful, even our children’s spaces will have the benefit of the gorgeous textile that you purchased while on vacation or the silver vase that was handed down by your husband’s aunt.  A vase in a nursery, pretty unexpected, indeed.  And yet, so perfect for this year’s trends.
