Inspiration Boards 101

As you know, I’m in the process of designing my son’s big-boy bedroom.  When I first designed his nursery, I gathered a bunch of photos together of inspiration and then used PowerPoint to try and make a semi-respectable inspiration board so that I could see all of the elements in a way that would help me determine if everything would work together.

Well, I’m not exactly sure how I missed this after YEARS of using Picasa on my computer to organize my pictures, but there is a MUCH EASIER way to go about making a collage of your photos to create a virtual inspiration board.  And the bonus, is that it ends up with a much prettier outcome.

So, I figured I would give a small tutorial on how to turn a collection of inspiration photos into a virtual inspiration board using Picasa.

As you can see in the screenshot below, I collected all of my photos in one folder on my computer.

Then I opened Picasa.  At the bottom, there is an icon for, you guessed it, Collage (genius, I tell you).

When you click on the ‘collage’ button, it gathers all of the pictures in your particular folder and, crazily enough, creates a collage.  There is an option to select a background color and BONUS you can use any color from the photos in the collage.  So I just made sure to include a paint swatch from the Benjamin Moore website and then I selected it with the eyedropper tool…

…so that my background became the color we plan to paint the room.  The collage feature also has a plethora of collage options…everything from a pile of pictures (which I chose) to a mosaic to a contact sheet where you can include information on each photo.

Another great option is the ability to give your photos a white border so you can separate them a bit.

If you hover over each photo, a dial appears with a handle that you can twist to rotate the picture or zoom in and out to make your photo smaller or bigger.  You can also right click on each photo and send it forward or backward.

There are options to add and delete photos as well.  When you’re all done, you just click on the ‘Create Collage’ button and it creates a .jpg file of your collage.  Just. Like. That.

So here you go.  A virtual pin board, if you will, of my son’s big boy room.

I am so pleased with the functionality and the ease-of-use of this feature in Picasa.  I hope you all find it helpful too.
