Narrow spaces…

Matchbox-shaped houses do have their charm, I must say! What one can do with such narrow spaces is pretty fascinating, and awe-inspiring for that matter. Take these four houses for example – built around the world – each has its own character, neighboring details, and personal touches.

HOUSE NO. 1
Singapore / shophouse turned home (middle structure):

… this quote from the owner, Yang Yeo, is quite fitting for this photo: "Shophouses brought back memories of our childhoods, of open back doors and neighbors and relatives wandering in and out of the kitchen and cooking and eating and coming and going whether you liked it or not."

HOUSE NO. 2
Tokyo / Long Tall House:

… what an ingenious concept for a "covered" carport / garage. Even though this building is so structured, I feel the circular staircase is really what grounds the entire space. And isn't the night view beautifully translucent?

HOUSE NO. 3
London / Silver House:

… sitting so perfectly still between the Victorian style buildings, this 3-meter-wide house was built on the site of a single-storey wine vault. The owners actually prefer to call it "the Glass House", instead of the Silver House. What do you think?

HOUSE NO. 4
Sweden / Townhouse in Landskrona:

… what I love about this house is that even though it's completely unexpected on such a traditional and idyllic street, it looks so incredibly stunning, as if it's straight out of a (modern) fairy tale.

Wow – these photos kind of make me think that living narrow is the way to go. Some real thought and creativity went into designing all of these beautiful spaces. Amazing!

I love the juxtaposition of the old with the new. The last house is especially appealing to me visually. It's form is so simple. The colors in the image are so fresh.
