Why Don’t You…?

… create your own, one-of-a-kind art?

Typography-based art is still going strong in the art/design world, and I love seeing the trend re-imagined in various homes. I spotted this image from Jennifer Hagler and my imagination was immediately sparked – I’m envisioning how perfect this piece would look in an office, bedroom or even nursery, spelling out all sorts of fun and quirky messages…

Shop on Wheels: Yarnover

I am a big fan of the food truck craze that has been sweeping the nation over the last few years. The mobility of 100s of food options makes for some tasty dishes and awesome new experiences. But trucks aren’t just for food anymore. Enter – shops on wheels. I’ve been inside the Styleliner (a fashion boutique on wheels) and the latest one to be showcased – a yarn shop on wheels called Yarnover.

The 2 gals from Yarnover have outfitted an old Little Debbie’s food truck into a one-stop shop for selecting yarn and creating style inspired by old Hollywood icons knitting on the sets of their films, like Audrey Hepburn. Creating a mobile shop allows the duo to work their full time gigs and then passionately selling and sharing yarn style. Click here to read their story and their lightbulb moment for pulling it all together.

Sonia Delaunay

Inspiration in our daily lives can come from numerous sources. Color, texture and pattern are abundant in our environment, whether dancing shadows as the sun hits the leaves of a tree, or an industrial grating, with intensity and rhythmic pattern. I recently came across a book published as part of an exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum on the work of Sonia Delaunay titled Color Moves: Art & Fashion by Sonia Delaunay. Her studies in pattern and texture as a painter extended into varied medium and in turn, expression. It is wonderful to see through her eyes the design process as it evolved investigating the relationship of pattern, color and movement.
‘Painter, textile and stage designer and co-conspirator (with her husband Robert Delaunay) of the Orphist movement, Sonia Delaunay is a heroine of early modernist art and design. Known primarily as an abstract painter and colorist, Delaunay applied her talents and theories to all areas of visual expression, including graphics, interiors, theater and film, fashion and textiles. A characteristic of Delaunay work is a vivid sense of movement and rhythm through careful color combination.
Color Moves: Art & Fashion by Sonia Delaunay focuses not only on her art but also her avant-garde fashion designs for her Atelier Simultane in Paris during the 1920s, as well as textiles she designed for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam in the 1930s.The book features essays by Delaunay experts Matteo de Leeuw-de Monti, Matilda McQuaid and Petra Timmer, accompanied by more than 300 paintings, drawings, designs, textiles, garments and photographs.’

An accomplished and celebrated artist, ‘Sonia Delaunay claimed the first retrospective for a living female artist at the Louvre. She described her textiles as mere “exercises in color” that informed her true passion, painting. But her work in fashion and the applied arts, via her Maison Delaunay design atelier, may well be her broader legacy.’

Try It: Headboard Storage

I love our bedroom more than any space in our home – it’s cozy, Scandinavian-inspired and features a charming wooden sauna we’ve built in the connecting suite. Yet one thing it does lack? Storage. Although my husband and I both have nightstands, it seems the books, magazines, bedside alarm clocks, hand lotion and baby monitor often pile atop each other until we’ve created a chaotic zone out of a calming retreat. Naturally, this headboard that boasts double-duty storage is calling my name…

2 Ways Renters Can Rock Wallpaper

As a longtime renter and small space dweller, I’ve picked up some awesome design tips for making my space feel great (that’s what it’s about, folks!) From color to space planning to DIYs, creating a home that is personal and full of style and design is easy to achieve even if you are a renter. These days, product designers have started to create items that renters can use in their temporary homes. One of my fave – wallpaper. There are tons of neat options out there that apply to the wall with a sticky back that can also peel right off (think Post-It note).

What do you think of temporary wallpaper? Would you use it in your own home?
