Why Don’t You…?

…get crafty with your kitchen cabinets?

I’m a huge fan of quirky furniture and decor, so when I spotted this unique cupboard, I spiraled into “How can I recreate this look in my home NOW?” mode. And because I’m not necessarily gifted in the area of free-hand drawings, I thought of a perfectly temporary solution:

Why not coat your kitchen cabinets in dry erase paint? They’ll appear to be nothing more than a bright white finish, yet when you feel like having fun with your space, you can doodle plates, glasses and other cupboard contents on the cabinet’s exterior. Or, you could use it as a space to list your grocery needs, important reminders or funny things your kid said that day. The possibilities are truly endless, right?

Tell me, are you quirky enough to doodle on your kitchen cabinets? Or do you prefer your space to be polished and [gasp!] more grown-up?

Open Shelving

One of the really great things about our home when we purchased it was that the kitchen had already recently been redone.  Since our home is our “30-year-home” it made great sense to us that we wouldn’t have to move in and re-do the kitchen…and then turn around and re-do it 30 years from now when we want to sell….because let’s face it, no matter how nice your kitchen is, in 30 years, it will be outdated.

However, that does mean that all of the beautiful inspiration that is out there in the kitchen department falls on blind eyes around here.  But that doesn’t keep me from lusting after some beautiful spaces that I wish I could have in my kitchen…perhaps I save these ideas in my head for my ‘beach house’…you know, that fake house that we will never have enough money to purchase but that I keep in the back of my head so that I can redecorate it at whim.  What.  You don’t do that?

My latest obsession is open shelving.  Perhaps it is an obsession because 1) I can’t do it in my own kitchen  and 2) it seems very impractical for my lifestyle (re: cluttered) and since I’m admittedly day dreaming I can day dream my way into believing something like this would actually work for me…(see: cluttered…also, dusty).  I also really appreciate that there are different ways to ‘do’ open shelving that can lend itself well to multiple styles.

While I often consider open shelving to skew a kitchen to the more traditional/slightly country feel, like in the ones below…

…there are also many different open shelving options that can be quite modern…

…and/or contemporary…

…even minimalist, dare I say.

So what are your thoughts on open shelving in kitchens?  Pretty but impractical?  Or lust-worthily form and function?
