Pattern on pattern is a fast-growing trend in the fashion world, and we’ve certainly seen the look interpreted in home textiles like mix-and-match throw pillows, bedding and layered rugs. But tell us, have you ever considered mixing patterns on your walls or ceilings? Surely it’s not possible, right?
… hang something unexpected from your ceiling beams?
I love exposed beams in ceilings, perfect for creating an airy feel in any room while providing it with a healthy dose of character. But if you’re into extremes, why not give your ceiling beams just the tiniest extra jolt and add something truly surprising overhead?
… mural your ceiling?
I posted a glorious chalkboard ceiling last month, but isn’t the idea paling in comparison to this Sistine Chapel-esque muraled room? It’s overwhelming, yes, but is the perfect hiding spot for an art lover with a penchant for painterly inspiration.
…write on your ceiling?
We’ve seen chalkboard walls, chalkboard headboards – even chalkboard dressers! – but never have I seen a chalkboard ceiling. Sure, you’ll have to pencil a lot more dusting time in the family calendar, but still, it’s an inspired look, yes?
I’m imagining a sweet nursery with chalky stars at night and dreamy clouds during the day – perfectly interchangeable, temporary and educational! Tell me, where would you try a chalkboard ceiling? And just what would you write on yours?

… go completely crazy with the paper lanterns? Sure, you’ve seen a cluster or two in the corner of a nursery, or perhaps a few appeared in the latest birthday part you attended, but have you ever seen so many in one place?
I love how the look is playful, yet surprisingly sophisticated when combined with neutral decor and layered, natural elements. What do you think, friends? Would you give it a go?
