H20

The season of light is upon us, with displays ranging from vibrant  and glorious color to subdued tonal effects. Each experience communicating through the filtering of light however bold or subtle its intent. I love the light quality of winter. The sun is low and there is a brightness to the light that is uplifting when days are short and temperatures cold. DaDe Art and Design Lab’s ”H2O,  is a 10 foot collaborative sculptural piece inspired by the shape of a water drop. Created by Darcy Lundgren, Greg Fraser & Phillip Baldwin using approximately 400 empty limited edition 2008 Christian Lacroix prêt-à-porter Evian water bottles.” A beautiful and artful display emanating filtered light and organic form. I found this to be an especially refreshing and beautiful expression this holiday season. With an emphasis on sustainability, his work is focused on “environmental awareness- turning something wasteful into a work of art.”

Personal Confetti

While looking for some New Years Eve inspiration, I came across a wonderful way to personalize a celebration. A DIY project simple enough to create with time to spare for the big night. Images of friends and family can be used to create an image collage. Using paper punches of various sizes, punch out festive confetti circles. Place a handful in an envelope for each guest, and pass them out before the clock strikes midnight. A fun and personal explosion of color and memory of the passing year. Happy New Year!

Why Don’t You…?

…write on your ceiling?

We’ve seen chalkboard walls, chalkboard headboards – even chalkboard dressers! – but never have I seen a chalkboard ceiling. Sure, you’ll have to pencil a lot more dusting time in the family calendar, but still, it’s an inspired look, yes?

I’m imagining a sweet nursery with chalky stars at night and dreamy clouds during the day – perfectly interchangeable, temporary and educational! Tell me, where would you try a chalkboard ceiling? And just what would you write on yours?

Fireplace for the Holidays?

So, you don’t have a fireplace for the holidays? No way for Santa to get in, huh. Whatever will you do? Well, there’s nothing like the power of imagination. This chalkboard-paint creation is the perfect solution to a festive holiday mantle. Ok, so you might need a space heater handy for warmth, but what a cheerful and fun solution for  hanging those stockings by the chimney with care.

This simple project is made with a painters drop cloth, primed and then painted with chalkboard paint. Sew in a rod pocket, and design away! Happy Holidays.

Le Plic

A modern wall sconce is often a design challenge. Something dynamic, offering not only ambient light to a room, but visual interest and a bit of drama. An expressive and gorgeous solution, the Le Pic designed by Nathalie Dewez. Offered by ligne-roset,, it throws light in an artful array, and creates focus to the mounting surface. The design is so stunningly simple: “The originality of this wall light lies in its simple use. Its construction is particularly ingenious: the ‘Plic’ is made of a round bulb with a lateral reflector; it is used as a torch that can be attached to different places with a spring-clip.” This spring clip attachment piece is where you come in. A DIY installation, creating a custom art installation unique to each user. You can arrange the bulbs however you fancy, the spacing and placement producing varied effect on mood of a room. Great fun!
