Dream Downtown

Situated between the happening Meatpacking District and Chelsea neighborhood, I find the Dream Downtown boutique hotel to be both stylistically cutting edge and grounded in NYC history. Whether enjoying the loft like accommodations, taking in the stunning views of the New York City skyline from the rooftop lounge or sampling the holistic haute cuisine of award-winning Chef Dr. Miguel Sanchez Romera, Dream Downtown promises to be a longstanding New York hot spot. I am especially fond of this project, as I used to walk by this building often. It is adjacent to the Maritime Hotel, and is co-mingled as current resident in the original and historic National Maritime Union of America buildings, designed in 1964 by Albert Ledner.

Handel Architects served as both architect and interior designer for the Dream Hotel project. Ledner’s original building’s porthole windows were critical to preserve in the repurposed function. They provided a vocabulary to build on throughout the design of the hotel, and brought a playful quality to the elegant and simple modern interior.

Two hundred hand blown glass globes float through the lobby and congregate over The Marble Lane restaurant filling the space with a magical light cloud. Fixtures and furnishings were custom designed for the public spaces and guestrooms to complement the exterior design and to continue the limitless feeling of space. I can’t wait to visit.
