Antique packaging…

Today I thought I would share with you one of my favorite books, Antique Packaging by Josep M. Garrofé. I love collecting antique and vintage labels and packages, so you can imagine how excited I was when I came across this book. As a designer, it's the first place I go to whenever I need inspiration, especially typography and patterns from the past. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but it's that nostalgic feeling that I love. Just the thought of designing these intricate packages without the use of computer… now that's quite a feat. If you like antique packaging as much as I do, you would really enjoy this book. Thoroughly categorized into eleven chapters – pharmacy, audiovisual, personal care, dressmaking, office, entertainment, care elements, perfume industry, domestic, food, and tobacco – Antique Packaging is a collection of boxes that were made of paper and cardboard only. Interested in the history of printing, typography, and packaging? There is a great introduction that hits those points as well. And with close to four hundred pages of eye candy, it really is a great resource not only for designers, but for those who love and appreciate retro designs. Wonder if they would come out with a book with metal packs, that would definitely be another book to add to my collection.
