Elton John and David Furnish’s Family Home

The recently published home of Elton John and David Furnish is a classic modern 1960′s California Ranch. The interior was designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, creating an environment appropriately sophisticated and personalized for entertaining, but also functioning as a comfortable family home for ’two year old Zachary, and a newborn son, Elijah, who arrived just as the Architectural Digest issue went to press.’ Drawn to the livability of a ranch, it provided ‘indoor-outdoor’ connection and the benefit of being all on one floor, with plenty of room for the kids to run around. The couples art collection enjoys a gallery like display space, and the bold blocks of color on the primary furniture adds definition and great visual punch. Absolutely lovely.

Will Ferrell’s Renovated West Village Loft

Will Ferrell’s Manhattan loft is a light, bright family home for he and his wife, and their three children. Designed by Shawn Henderson, it is furnished with modern classics and a colorful and graphic art collection. The loft is located in a ‘converted Victorian-era printing factory, and is nearly 2,800 square feet.’ Since purchasing in 2010, the Ferrrell’s completely renovated the space, updating bathrooms, the kitchen and floors.’  I personally love the serenity of the tonal palettes selected for the decor of each room. The grey tones of teh family room and master bedroom are calming and appropriately simple for the loft space they inhabit. The bright white of the main space allows the art and color in the furniture to ‘pop’ and function as accents in the large open space. The dark kitchen counters work well with the structure of the space in black, creating a framework defining the implied rooms of the space without using walls, based on their function and use. The Ferrell family designed some very comfortable urban digs, I have to believe filled with lots of happiness and laughter.

City Circus Hostel

With the rapid growth in the boutique hotel market, it seems appropriate that a hip and happening designer Hostel would be of great interest. A budget friendly option for the well traveled, providing all the the comforts of hotel living. In a difficult economy, a welcome respite. City Circus in Athens, Greece is filled with only necessary, simple, comfortable and well designed objects. Vintage and reclaimed furniture, and local artist’s work fill the rooms. The vibe is thoughtful and inviting, suggesting gathering of family rather than strangers. The environment designed to foster a very real essence of community. Lasting memories, and many return trips.

Brad Pitt’s Malibu Home

Brad Pitt’s dreamy midcentury modern home is currently on the market in Malibu. It is sleek, low and long, and is sited waterfront with spectacular views. The homes updated interior features classic and collectible midcentury furniture. In contrast, the kitchen has an industrial influence, with a raw steel dining table, stainless steel cabinetry and and glass work surfaces. This place is perfect for entertaining both large crowds spilling out onto the property, and intimate gatherings enjoying the view. My favorite elements in this home provide the homeowner the ability to blurr the lines between inside and out. True to its midcentury modern roots, this is achieved in the living area with a series of sliding glass panels, opening a large expanse of the exterior wall to connect to a deck running the length of the building. The exposed concrete structure provides the structural integrity needed to open up such a large expanse of glass, column free. Additionally, a fabulous garage door ‘wall’ connects the garden to the kitchen, providing flexibility of space use and maximum light. These simple gestures, in a climate such as this where the out of doors can be enjoyed most months of the year, create a sense of space and useable square footage much greater than the footprint of the building itself. Access to this beautiful outdoor space, both functionally as well as visibly connected, allow Mr. Pitt’s home to live large. Absolutely lovely!

Julianne Moore’s West Village Home

Understated. Minimal. Elegant. I love this home. Julianne Moore’s West Village apartment in New York City is so comfortable and livable, it reminds me of the qualities I adored in my own Brooklyn home. The vintage details of a prewar building, great light and well proportioned space, are the perfect backdrop to this modern collection of art and furniture. Although this space is simple, it possesses a wonderful spirit of the unexpected. If you look closely, you will spot some recognizable, but not overused vintage pieces. Did you notice the repurposed Florence Knoll credenza in the bathroom? What a creative solution for a narrow space, providing lots of storage and a double bowl sink. Floating the tub in the center of the space creates a ‘furniture-like’ focal point. Brilliant! The neutral palette of greys blacks and whites, are perfect with the mid-value wide plank wood floors, throughout the space. A very homey urban retreat.
