Home | Sustainability Efforts - Manufacturing
In addition to beautiful modular flooring, FLOR is a pioneer in the carpet world when it comes to responsible manufacturing and processes. We've been doing it for over 15 years. We're not perfect, but we are making some great strides toward figuring out how to do things better and more efficiently.
We can't be experts at everything, so we very carefully seek out and select partners who share our vision - FLOR kindred spirits, if you will. We hunt down partners who have embraced the same view of responsible business we have and are willing to do what it takes to help change the way people think about sustainability and being green. Then we rely on them to do what they do best: "symbiosis with the mostest."
One of the most obvious ways to reduce emissions is by using less energy. After energy conservation, we look at renewable energy to help us improve our emissions. We realized a long time ago that the fossil fuels we depend on - oil, coal and natural gas - would not last forever, so we made it our goal to operate our facilities with 100 percent renewable energy, including solar, wind, landfill gas, among others.
Through our partnership with the City of LaGrange, Georgia, we are able to pipe methane gas from a local landfill to use as an energy source for manufacturing. Even though it meant reinventing the ways in which these processes are fueled, it was worth it for the decreased reliance on natural gas and significantly reduced emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. Our LaGrange story is only one: overall, we have reduced our GHG emissions in Interface facilities worldwide by 60 percent since 1996. Taken together, these stories comprise the book we wrote on pioneering a sustainable business platform.
