Meet Jewel Marlowe
Being a military family means relocating at the drop of a hat. Putting down roots can be a challenge, but designer Jewel Marlowe sees every move as a creative opportunity. In the last decade, Jewel and her family have lived everywhere from London to Virginia. Along the way, she learned the ropes of interior design and began her own business.

Behind the Design
We visited Jewel in her metro D.C. home to chat about how her globetrotting lifestyle inspires her eclectic aesthetic.
Describe your approach to design.
I like using a gathered, layered approach to create an eclectic style with color and pattern that’s pulled together in a glamorous way. I call it glam with soul.
How has being a military spouse influenced your style?
We’ve moved thirteen times, but England is where I found my love for soulful elements. I started going to antique auctions and refurbishing and reselling vintage pieces. Every room should have something that’s old and has character.
What’s the secret to mastering maximalism?
I break patterns down into stripes, geometric, and organic and make sure there isn’t too much of one thing. The living room was missing organic elements, so I knew the Doe Re Mi rug was a good fit. Varying scale is also important. For example, pairing a small stripe with a large organic.
What are your tips for choosing a rug?
I love a pattern, but it’s also okay to have a neutral rug. You don’t want too many stars in the show. If you already have bold wallpaper, a neutral rug will help other design elements sing.
How do you adapt your designs to new spaces?
As a military spouse and someone who likes to change things around, I love that I can take a FLOR rug from one room that’s an 8 by 10 and turn it into a runner in another. The flexibility of being able to reuse it in other spaces.
What’s your favorite thing about FLOR?
Aside from the patterns, my rugs don’t seem to get dirty! I’m impressed with how well they hold up to our dog and four kids. And if something happens to a FLOR rug, you can just trade out a tile instead of the whole thing.
