A Mid-Century Mod Haven

Reporting from sunny Palm Springs, we’re here to celebrate the favorite festival of thousands of design lovers worldwide: Modernism Week, an annual gathering highlighting all things modern, including design, art, and architecture.

This year, we partnered with Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper, the designers behind Limón. Step into the home of these design extraordinaires and be transported back to the height of modern design by a cascade of vibrant colors, clean lines, graphic shapes, and Mid-Century motifs.

We really enjoyed using FLOR. Each of our rug creations is completely unique, and there were colors and patterns that perfectly fit each space—even our entryway runner.

This renovation was special. The house was always beautiful, but we felt like we could make it more of a reflection of ourselves.

Our favorite thing about FLOR rugs is that you can get the exact size you need. The ability to do your own on-site customization is so comforting.

With FLOR, you have a chance to make an incredible statement with so many amazing designs. Pick something that makes you happy; it doesn’t have to follow what other people are doing.

Meet Hawkes and Kemper

When Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper bought their first fixer-upper home in Palm Springs in 2004, they never could have imagined what was in store for them. After remodeling it, they were hooked. Falling in love with Mid-Century design, they created H3K Home+Design, a full-service design and build company with their own large furniture showroom, to share their passion with the world.

Check out the story behind the remodel of their most recent project: their home.

What’s the story behind your home renovation?

This renovation was special. We have owned this home since 2010, but have always wanted to make some changes. While the house has always been beautiful, the previous updates had been design choices made by others, and we wanted to make the house more of a reflection of us.

We waited until a time when we could do a substantial renovation that touched all surfaces, including the pool and outdoor areas. So, at the beginning of 2022, we pulled the trigger and finally created a place we really feel is our home.

How did the floor coverings play into the overall design aesthetic of the space?

We really enjoyed using FLOR carpet in so many of our rooms. There are so many choices that complement the personalities of the spaces they inhabit. Each of our carpet creations is completely unique, with colors and patterns that are a perfect fit for each space—even our entryway runner.

What has been your favorite thing about FLOR rugs?

Besides all the amazing designs and colors, our favorite thing about FLOR rugs is that you can get the exact size you want or need. The ability to do your own on-site customization is so comforting.

As designers, we are sometimes on the fence about the size of a rug we are ordering or buying. But with FLOR, if one of the rugs is too big, we can just remove a section of squares or easily cut them to create the exact dimension that we want. We aren’t constrained by limited size choices.

Do you have any design tips for creating a home that’s representative of your style and personality?

Do something exciting. You have a chance to make an incredible statement with access to so many amazing patterns and designs—you can even create your own rug. Pick out something that makes you happy; it doesn’t have to follow what other people are doing. Break some rules and mix patterns and colors that you like.

Modernism Week celebrates and fosters appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation and sustainable modern living as represented in the greater Palm Springs area.
