Giving Back in Style

The Russell hotel is more than just a chic getaway—it’s a way to give back to those in need.

Welcome to The Russell

Located in trendy East Nashville, The Russell is a boutique hotel housed in a renovated historic church. But this hotel isn’t just about Insta-worthy looks. For every stay, The Russell donates a sizable portion of its proceeds to local homeless ministries. Read more about how The Russell teamed up with FLOR to make their creative vision a reality.

We loved the idea of using carpet tiles. In case there are any issues or spills, we can just pop another tile in.

When we started designing, the first thing that stood out were the stained glass windows. The church was built in 1904, and the color in them is amazing. We wanted to create an homage to those windows through the interior design.

Learn More About The Russell

We spoke to Micah Lacher from The Russell and Katie Vance from Powell Architecture + Building Studio about the hotel’s unique look and how they brought it to life with FLOR.

WHAT DREW YOU TO CREATE A HOTEL INSIDE A HISTORIC CHURCH?

The church was built in 1904 and was falling into disrepair, but it had so much character. We were completely in awe of how beautiful the space was inside and out, and its history in the community. It’s in East Nashville, which is so vibrant and creative, and it really lended itself to celebrating color and design.

HOW DID SUSTAINABILITY FACTOR INTO YOUR DESIGN?

We reused as much as we could from the church’s original materials. We salvaged beams and windows, and even turned the pews into headboards for the guest beds. FLOR’s commitment to recycling and sustainability made their rugs the perfect match.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR FLOR RUGS?

Katie: The unique colorways and patterns are so fun to play with as a designer.

Micah: And from a management standpoint, it’s important to have the stain resistance and durability, and ability to just pop out a carpet tile and replace it with a new one. That’s what attracted us to FLOR—beautiful design and great function.

HOW DID YOU WORK WITH FLOR’S DESIGN SERVICES TO BRING YOUR VISION TO LIFE?

This is an old building, plus we added five extra rooms in the attic, so there’s a unique shape upstairs. It was critical to work with a rep and make sure the layout would work with the pattern. Once we sent over the floor plan and had it laid out, we were confident Antique Minx was going to work in that space. And now we’re all in love with the pattern!
