Known for daring designs with an eclectic touch, L.A.-based studio Black Lacquer Design was founded by Caitlin Murray in 2014. We sat down with Caitlin for a chat about her latest interior design project: a chic, contemporary home nestled in the hills of Bel Air.

I like that FLOR is always adding new styles and stays on top of what’s happening in the rest of the market. At the end of the day, I can always find something at FLOR because there are so many options.

Eclectic elements look timeless and give the home a reflection of the client’s identity. It’s soulful and layered rather than a neat little package.

We sat down for a chat with Caitlin to learn more about how she used FLOR to style this L.A. home.

As a designer, what’s your favorite thing about FLOR rugs?

FLOR is always adding new designs and staying on top of new trends. Plus, there are a ton of neutrals that feel like woven sisal. They’re great for creating a layered effect by adding other rugs on top, too.

Your interiors have tons of fun patterns. How do you balance those?

Mind the scale of the pattern. In a small space, small patterns can look chaotic. A larger one feels more open. Establish your color palette by taking something with a pattern, like a rug, and use that to determine the rest of the colors. It creates continuity.

What made FLOR a good fit for this home?

This client has a brand-new baby and three dogs who love to chew on rugs. I also needed something really large to fill the room. FLOR was perfect. It’s affordable, durable, and if any one of the squares gets destroyed, it’s super easy to switch out.
