As a dad, I’m all about blending style with practicality. Softer elements, rounded corners, and of course, kid-friendly FLOR rugs to handle spills and adventures.

FLOR’s Signature Rugs take the guesswork out of designing a personalized rug.

The idea of not sacrificing style for practicality is exactly why FLOR is a perfect fit for kid-friendly and pet-friendly environments.

I gravitate toward interiors that are unique. I leave my mark by adding something quirky or even a piece that clashes with the rest of the room to draw the eye.

When I want to change up my space, FLOR’s tile design makes it easy to move or rearrange our rugs.

Spills come with the territory of having a toddler, but I don’t have to worry about messes with carpet tiles—they’re super easy to clean.

We sat down to get his tips on creating a gorgeous home for the whole family.

Tell us about yourself and how you combined your career experience to create Flynnside Out Productions.

I created Flynnside Out Productions 15 years ago, combining my design and decorating skills with my television production experience. Residential interior design has been the main focus of our business since the beginning. Furnishing a home, making the design very practical, creating a space that can grow alongside a family – that’s our specialty.

Can you share a bit more about your interior design philosophy and how you bring your unique design style to each project?

I gravitate toward interiors that are unique. I leave my mark by adding something quirky or even a piece that clashes with the rest of the room to draw the eye. We’re always thinking about how a space looks through the camera lens. We’re always looking to tell a cohesive story through design choices. But, of course, practicality is also a huge part of my design philosophy.

What's the most exciting thing about designing other people’s spaces? What about designing your own?

The best part of my job is helping bring people’s spaces all together. I love going into a client’s home and working with a piece of furniture that is sentimental to the family or a piece of artwork that tells a compelling story.

When it comes to my own home, I don’t have guardrails like when I work with a client. I’m able to experiment with my own style and tweak it based on the stage of life that I’m in. As a new dad, I’ve had to shift my design thinking and our living spaces to meet our needs, bringing in softer accent pieces, rounded edges, and performance fabric. That’s what’s so exciting about being a designer. I’m always learning, growing, and adapting based on my personal experiences.

What made FLOR a good fit for your home?

When I started my interior design career in 2004, the very first brand I worked with was FLOR. Area rugs made of carpet tiles were such an innovative concept no one else was doing, and FLOR did that while still offering a range of colors, patterns, and textures. Twenty-one years later, I get to work with FLOR again and build upon my design mentality that interiors can be beautiful and practical. With a daughter and pets, FLOR is the perfect combination of style and performance for a growing family.

We noticed that you originally had an all-white home that you were super excited about before welcoming Clover into your family. How did becoming a father change your perspective on designing your home?

After becoming a father, we found that contrast, pattern, and color are great for childhood development. So, with FLOR, we decided to go the complete opposite of all white. Every time you look down, you’re transitioning from one color or pattern to another. We’re embracing the Mid-Century Modern look and feel of our home with harvest gold, teal and turquoise, and graphic patterns. Each room has its own personality and experience created by the rugs on the floor.

Why do you think FLOR is a good fit for kid-friendly (and pet-friendly) environments.

FLOR provides a worry-free design experience, which is so important with kids and pets. You’re investing in modularity with 19.7”x19.7” tiles that can be picked up, moved around, washed, and replaced. And with options that fit in traditional, transitional, modern, and Mid-Century Modern homes, FLOR has something for everyone. The idea of not sacrificing style for practicality is exactly why it’s a perfect fit for kid-friendly and pet-friendly environments.

You’re going to be putting FLOR rugs throughout your home to help with the “kid-proofing process.” Tell us a little about each space and the rugs you’ve chosen.

FLOR offers so many pre-made and customizable carpet tile options for our Mid-Century Modern atomic ranch. For this project, we’re experimenting with all wall-to-wall designs like they would have in 1965. We created a variety of custom designs, working with FLOR’s design team to create the perfect rug for each space. My daughter’s playroom features a custom buffalo checkered design with blues, purples, and whites, while our nursery embraces a muted blush color palette.
