Meet Shayla Owodunni, design studio and lifestyle brand founder of The Plant Penthouse, who focuses on biophilic design.

My philosophy centers around what I call the four P’s: plants, personal presence, panache, and purpose

Using nature in design is such a great way to highlight different shapes, textures, and hues.

The ability to easily wash individual carpet tiles made it possible for my design vision to come to life.

FLOR FITS SO PERFECTLY INTO MY SUSTAINABILITY GOALS AS THE RUGS CAN BE MOVED, REARRANGED, AND EVEN RECYCLED.

Working with FLOR’s design experts was eye opening.

Vibrant style in smaller spaces is Shayla’s focus as a designer. Her nature-centered style demands flexibility, sustainability, and beauty—which is exactly why FLOR rugs are a natural fit.

We talked to Shayla about tips for living a more vibrantly styled life and how FLOR’s sustainability mission fits into her biophilic interior designs.

The Plant Penthouse began as a personal blog, inspired by using plants to bring nature into my small urban living spaces. Today, The Plant Penthouse is a biophilic design studio and lifestyle brand that offers editorial styling, writing, and commercial biophilic design services. My philosophy centers around what I call the four P's: plants, personal presence, panache, and purpose—with nature as the primary muse for colors, textures, and shapes.

Vibrancy is so personal and should be interpreted individually. My ultimate goal when designing spaces is ensuring each room feels authentic to my clients by creating a sense of happiness and personal connection. In my own home, I use color as a primary vehicle for vibrancy, pairing neutral bases with colorful statement pieces that can be easily changed to transform a space. That’s one of the reasons I love FLOR so much. The flexibility is endless.

Plants are a living and breathing cornerstone of the world around us. Naturally infusing the deep connection between plants and humans is my passion. Using nature in design is such a great way to highlight different shapes, textures, and hues. Biophilia allows designers to breathe life into spaces—that’s why I’ve always been drawn to it.

My design style is both nature-forward and environment-forward. I really think about what we’re leaving behind for future generations, focusing on quality, long-lasting pieces and materials that can be recycled, reused, or repurposed. FLOR fits so perfectly into that philosophy as the tiles can be picked up, moved around, and reconfigured for so many different applications.

Along with flexibility and sustainability, I absolutely love how easy FLOR tiles are to clean! I would have never chosen a traditional black and cream rug for my dining and living room space because of the potential messes. But with FLOR, the ability to easily wash individual carpet tiles made it possible for my design vision to come to life.

My living and dining area has always been a challenge because the spaces so closely connect. The custom Heaven Sent rug I created for that space subtly divides the areas while maintaining cohesion. FLOR’s complementary design experts introduced me to possibilities I hadn’t considered, like combining different collections to create a cohesive rug design. The process was seamless from concept to installation and matched exactly what I envisioned.
